Calne Running Club News

Simon Nott won the U15 boys' event in 12:28 and Francesca Bentley was second in the U11 fun run in 8:17. However, only three men and no ladies ran in the final championship race of the season.

On a cold crisp morning, there was a good run by Simon and a personal best for Dave Telfer, while Tony was dressed as Santa.

There were 322 finishers. Mark Cawley's wife Shan finished in 63:40.

Stu March ran the Endurancelife Costal Trail Marathon in Gower on in 05:28:06 finishing 79th out of 101. He describes it as:

A very hilly affair, but a beautiful bright day with incredible scenery – love it!

Lara did the 10K in 1:34:26 finishing 119th out of 125.

Stu ran this 10/11-ish country miles, multi-terrain featuring “bog of doom”, pools, and the hills of hell in 1:51:35 and described it as lots of wet muddy fun.

On a difficult course, Stu finished the half-marathon in 3 hours 16 seconds while Lara required 1 hour 30 minutes 27 seconds for the 10k.

Judging by readings from those with GPS watches, the course was closer to 7 miles than 10km. Conditions were a little damp but everybody seemed to enjoy it.

Stu March took part in this demanding and spectacular marathon.

Stu reports that it was an "amazing experience" but wet and windy. He finished 672nd out 1133 finishers in a time of 4:25:49, which is pretty impressive considering the climb of 1580 metres according to his watch data.

Apologises that there have been no updates to the web site over the last month. The web master will try to get all the results up by the end of the week.

There were 1445 finishers.

Fiona Halfpenny finished 30th lady in 2:04:35.

The fog cleared just before the start of the race to give some lovely conditions for an excellent race with Steve and Tony in particular racing to the very end. There were only 42 finishers.

Fiona Halfpenny was 29th out of 94 finishers in the Great Wishford 10k in a time of 53:10.

Fiona Halfpenny finished third female but cannot find any official results.

Nine club members took place in the half-marathon to celebrate Chippenham Harriers' 25th birthday.

As well as the Chippenham half-marathon, there was another local half-marathon on September 14.

Stu March finished 1080 in a personnel best of 1:37:39 while Amanda Mackenzie was 2734 in 1:48:14.

Steve Watts was our sole runner in the race.

Steve finished in 1:11:39 to finish 144 out of 439 runners. Mandy (Steve's wife) finished 273rd in 1:23:05.

Tony Nott ran the Ridgeway Challenge over the weekend finishing in just over 21 hours.

There were not many Calne runners competing in the Conkwell Killer, which was the eighth race in the club championship.

Fiona Halfpenny raced the train in Tywyn. Conditions were wet underfoot and Fiona finished 559th in 2 hours 15 minutes 22 seconds but did not beat the train. Results page

27 runners were fortunate as the weather cleared up long enough for this year's Heddington Handicap to be run in the dry.

Dave Halliday was in the first group to start in the handicap but was not caught. The first lady over the line was Karen Butler.

Simon Nott was the fastest runner in a time of 19:13 and Debbie Jones the fastest lady in 23:18.

There were 160 finishers. The results have not yet been published on the web.

Steve Watts and Fiona Halfpenny both competed in the Barbury Castle Track 'n' Trail 5 on 23 July.

Steve was 60th in a time of 39:40 while Fiona was 108th in 45:23. There were 168 finishers.

Results have yet to be published but Simon Nott was the fastest runner.

It was a wet evening for the July race in the club championship.

The results had been published but appear to have been partly removed. Nichola was the second lady vet.

Neil's daughters took part in the fun run as well; Harriet was the first KS1 girl in 15:20 and Chessie was third girl in 11:11.

Four runners from Calne took part in the Moonraker races held on July 6 in Urchfont.

In the main 10k race, Dave Telfer was the first Calne runner home.

Gareth Harman won the 5k fun run in 21:50.

Following a memorial run for Tom Fox, Calne runners featured well in the Lacock relay on 24 June.

Stu March ran the Miners Half-Marathon, in Midsomer Norton near Bath, on Sunday in a personal best time of 1:42:39.

There were four runners from Calne in this championship race.

There were 157 finishers. 

The result does not change any of the placings amoungst the leaders of the championship, although Tony, Dave and Nichola have all extended their lead over the rest of the pack. Paul moves up to eighth place in the men's championship.

David Kindred has published some pictures from the race.

Nichola Newton and Tony Nott were expected to race in this event but no news on results yet.

Following the Roundway Chase on Tuesday, the club raced the same route, as nobody had raced the course.

Still no news of results from the Keevil 10k other than Jim Brown finished in approximately 45 minutes.

Tony Nott and Nichola Newton both completed the Neolithic Marathon last Sunday.

These results takes Tony into second place for the marathon this year in the men's championship and Nichola into first in the ladies'.

Neil Bentley seemed to have recovered from running the London Marathon, as he was the first Calne Runner to finish in 43:17 (his best 10k time in a Calne vest). With a big turn out for this championship event, he had to be fast, as there were a lot of Calne runners hot on his heels. The men finished eleventh in the team event.

Something strange happened for the hill climb - the sun shone! It was Simon Nott who made hay, as he climbed the mile in 6 minutes 53 to beat the winner from last year, Alistair Bartlett of Avon Avalley Runners, and sixteen other runners.

The first lady was again Nichola Newton.

Four of our club members completed the London Marathon but only Steve Watts was dressed as an emu!

There is no full listing of the results but they can be searched.

Due to various commitments, updates on the web site have been slow lately but hopefully news will be back-filled over the next few days.

The third race of the club's championship was the Calne Fun Run on 30 March.

In his first race as a member, Barry Seed was the first Calne runner home. Dave Telfer continues to lead the men's championship while Nichola Newton gained the lead in ladies' championship because Lara Rushton was ill and unable to run.

There were 117 finishers. Full results.

In addition, Simon Nott was fifth in a time 38:37 while his brother Tim was 32nd in 46:28.

In wet and windy conditions, the start of the Bath half-marathon was delayed by an hour but our four runners produced some good times.

The second race of the club's championship was The Terminator on 24 February.

Tony Nott was the first Calne runner home by a long way despite claiming he was struggling. Neil Bentley leads the men's championship (closely followed by Dave Telfer) while Nichola Newton is the only lady to have started a championship race this year.

There were 822 runners. In the results, Steve is listed as finshing 499 and his wife 344 but it was the other way around.

Tim Bax was the first Calne runner to finish in the Slaughterford 9 in the first championship race of the year. There were 346 finishers.

Stu March took part in the 10k race of this event in Portland finishing 21st (out of 48 finishers) in a time of 1:07:15.

Dave Telfer was the sole runner at the Rough 'n' Tumble finishing 244th (out 524) in 1:44:23.

Membership fees for 2008 are now due. Please complete the renewal form and send to the Treasurer (Andy Driver) together with any fees.

Stu and (other half) Lara took part in the second race of this series. Stu completed the 10k in exactly 51 minutes, while Lara finished the 5k in 33:26.

Sportzform have amended their opening times. The shop is now open 10AM to 4PM on Monday, closed on Tuesday and open 10AM to 5PM for the rest of the week including Saturday but closed on Sunday.
